Creating content is fun, right? That’s why we have some content management tips for you.

Tip // You take care of the content of your website not your Content Management System

The big advantage to a CMS, then, is that it makes it very easy for you to put it on your website and to do so without being a seasoned programmer. The nice thing is that you can even choose when your content should come online or be removed again. For example, you can write a blog post now and not post it online until a week from now or place a product in auction from and until a certain date. But this is how far a CMS goes when it comes to management of your content.

Tip // What a CMS doesn't do

  • Telling you that the page you just wrote doesn’t make sense.
  • Telling you that the page you just posted online is never viewed.
  • That the content of a page is pretty much the same as any other page on your website.
  • Is not going to put content or products online for you.

So a CMS is a handy tool that makes it easy for you to post content online. So what, how much or where you post something online on your website is entirely up to you.

Tip // Updating content can be very boring, let's just make something new!

No, providing new content on your website is of course a must but this should not be a priority. Updating existing content is very important. It is therefore important to analyze whether that text you wrote a year ago is still relevant and whether there is any improvement or expansion is needed. Are your texts SEO friendly or can you improve them again? Is it perhaps wise to take a look at the Alt tags all together as discussed in our previous post because you have actually always paid too little attention to this.

True, this all sounds just a little less exciting than adding more and more content to your website. It is, of course, essential.

Tip // Some essential questions you should ask yourself

  • Is the content you have posted on your website still up to date?
  • Doesn’t your website have duplicate or conflicting content?
  • Are your texts clear and written for the target audience you want to appeal to?

Maintaining a website is 80% managing existing content and only 20% creating new!
